The Politics of Permits.

Last night we received a call from a contact in a near by village called Qaffin, asking if we could come to the gates in their town tomorrow morning because the workers passing through the gate had been having trouble with one particular soldier. When the gates opened, there were six soldiers there and the process of letting people pass to get to work was very slow. Several men were turned back, unable to get to work that day. Several more had their permits taken from them all together.  When we asked the soldiers why the men  were being turned away we got several answers. We were told that some of them had clothes that were too dirty, and that some of them had clothes that were too clean. We were told that some of them were bringing too many cigarettes with them (2-3 packs), and some of the men were given no reason at all.
